Simon Coates is “invaluable when it comes to solving particularly difficult issues”
Legal 500

Simon has practised as an employment law specialist for over 25 years. He is an experienced advocate and has lectured on employment law. Simon has written widely and provided expert commentary in newspapers and specialist publications on a range of employment law issues.

On qualification in 1988 he worked in the City with S J Berwin & Co as a commercial litigator where he acted for some of the country’s leading banks and listed companies. In 1992 he moved to Leeds where he developed his interest in employment law and become a senior employment law specialist with Eversheds.

Simon has had a wide range of experience during his career. He has represented many businesses dealing with disciplinary and termination issues, industrial disputes, discrimination claims against airlines and downsizing exercises. He has advised on complex TUPE issues, including in-sourcing and outsourcing arrangements, as well as the transfer of a medical School from one university to another and extensive off-shoring arrangements for a one of the country’s major insurers.

Simon is one of the few employment law practitioners equally at home dealing with Employment Tribunal proceedings as well as High Court litigation. He has particular expertise in enforcing confidentiality and post termination restrictions, and has obtained numerous injunctions to protect businesses from unlawful competition by departing employees and commercial rivals. He is also able to supervise the execution of Search Orders for other practitioners.

Simon is also experienced in other employment-related issues such as employee and minority shareholder claims, as well as partnership and shareholder agreement disputes. As well as acting for businesses, Simon has also acted for individuals with complex, high value claims. He successfully represented an employee in 2009 who recovered disability discrimination compensation of around £750,000 from his professional employer – a record award at that time.

Simon joined national law firm Irwin Mitchell in 1996 to set up the employment team in their Leeds office and in 2000 became National Head of Employment and Pensions, building a successful national employment practice before leaving in 2010 to set up his own successful employment practice.  He continues to act for national and international businesses and employees with high value and complex claims.
